Bio

Theo Altmaier is an oil painter and sculptor specializing in paintings that make you go “hmmmm that’s a odd take”. They are a weirdo-queer-future-liberation-theologist and have also been called a “freelance Mariologist”. They graduated from Colorado State University where they were a first-generation student. They earned a BFA concentrating in painting at CSU. Their future holds many things including going to graduate school for master’s in theological studies and one day a PhD in theology. After that adventure, they plan to get an Master of Fine Arts in painting.

Theo is an emerging artist residing in Fort Collins. They are working on a research project about Marian Spirituality as it shows up in Neo-Pagan practices.

Artist statement:

My art stands as a lamp post at a 7 spoked crossroads. The emerging roads are Queer, Esoteric, Neurodivergent, Marian, Pagan, Surrealist, and Mystic. As you can image, it creates quite a confusing traffic pattern.

Or you could imagine my art as a 7-course meal, but all the courses come out at once and you also have to eat them all at once. You are at quite a weird and experimental restaurant.

Regardless of how you conceptualize my body of work in theory, in practice I work in oil paint on canvas and in painted cast plaster to re-imagine divinity, the occult, the queer experience with religion, Marian spirituality, and grief. I look at these topics through my artistic Hept-oculars (binoculars, but with 7 lenses).

This body of work is what happens when you give a weirdo-queer-future-liberation-theologist access to art supplies and plenty of time to do research into whatever they want.
